When I switched to using Metal instead of OpenGL, I was surprised to see that althoguh my Mac Pro played back the project without obivous problems, Premiere Pro CC was reporting that 59 frames had been dropped. With OpenGL my Late 2013 Mac Pro played back the project without a single dropped frame. 265 clips with dissolves between each clip. Premiere Pro CC imports these h.265 clips without transcoding (FCP X does not), and I prepared a short project with about four h. I have been experimenting with this latest release of Premier Pro using both Metal and OpenGL with a project that consists entirely of clips shot with the Samsung NX-1 DSLR which shoots in the h.

I have a late 2013 Mac Pro (64 GB RAM, 1 TB flash memory, and AMD D700 graphics card). The latest Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.5 released a few days ago does indeed support Metal as well as OpenGL.
#ADOBE PREMIER PRO OSX UPDATE#
Update the above digitalartsonline article discussed the actual release of the new Adobe software and says it now supports Metal, I have now found the following earlier April article saying Adobe had announced this and would be shipping this new Metal supporting version supporting version this summer - which has now happened, this seems to make it more likely that Metal support is now thankfully true and included in the latest versions. This was the only article I could find that even suggests Adobe now support Metal and I am surprised at this as I would have thought this would have triggered far more press coverage if true. 2015.3 of Premier Pro and if not upgrading to it. Interestingly the following very recent article implies Adobe do now support Metal - er-effects-premiere-pro-character-animat… it would be worth making sure you have the versions referred to i.e. See this article about Adobe backing out of supporting Metal. See this video of Adobe demoing support for Metal as mentioned above. However if Adobe get their finger out of their backside and release a new version of their software with Metal support then it should run significantly faster on your Mac Pro. Unfortunately since then Adobe backed out of supporting Metal and are now prevaricating over whether they will ever support Metal despite the clear advantages it offers. Extremely annoyingly to the Mac community, during the official launch of Metal for the Mac an Adobe representative actually demonstrated copies of their software that had been converted to use Metal instead of CUDA and this did indeed show a huge improvement in performance. faster than both CUDA and OpenCL and Metal is available for AMD, Nvidia and some Intel video chips. Metal was original released on iOS devices but has since been ported to the Mac as well. However more recently Apple added a new system called 'Metal'. Apple use a combination of OpenCL and OpenGL which can run on both AMD and Nvidia cards but tends to be best on AMD cards. Nvidia cards use a system called CUDA to off-load processing from the CPU to the video card, CUDA is only available for Nvidia cards.
